A Parkville classic, beautifully evolved
Beyond the well-presented front garden, the entrance hall introduces the scale and detail of the original home. High ceilings, timber floors and period features continue into the front lounge, where an original fireplace and built-in cabinetry create a room with warmth and presence.
Further along, the dining room (possible 4th bedroom) opens through French doors to a leafy lightwell, bringing greenery and natural light into the centre of the home. A downstairs WC is neatly tucked beneath the original staircase, before the house transitions to more contemporary living spaces.
A generous kitchen anchors this part of the home with extensive storage and modern appliances, plus a cleverly positioned island dining/meals area also opening to a side courtyard. From here, the full width living/family room opens through French doors to the private brick courtyard, creating an easy connection between indoors and out. Beautifully secluded, the paved courtyard leads to secure garaging/workshop with additional storage and excellent rear access from Redpath Rise.
Upstairs, three generous bedrooms continue the home’s sense of scale and character. At the front bedroom, French doors open to the balcony and a leafy outlook across Royal Park, while the rear bedroom enjoys its own ensuite and walk-in robe. A substantial family bathroom with a full-sized bath and walk-in shower completes the level.
Hydronic heating throughout, comprehensive cooling on both levels and high-speed connectivity add further everyday comfort.
With green space at both ends and the city within easy reach, 84 Gatehouse Street brings together the character, space and practicality that make this pocket of Parkville so enduringly appealing.
Owners Notes
What we love about this home:
We have lived here a long time and this house has gently woven itself
into our everyday life. It is the kind of place that does not shout for
attention but quietly becomes part of who you are.
This old Hawthorn brick terrace has been a warm, steady presence for
us. It is full of character, with little details that remind you it has seen
many lives before ours. We have always tried to look after it properly, to
respect its history and be good guardians for whoever comes next. It is
more spacious than it first appears and the cellar under the front room
has been a lovely little bonus, perfect for wine and anything we wanted
tucked away.
What we will miss most is the feeling of the neighbourhood.
Gatehouse Street has a gentle rhythm. People say hello. Children wander
down to levers Reserve. Royal Park is right there when you need a bit of
green or a quiet walk. We have woken to rainbow lorikeets, galahs and
fairy wrens more times than we can count, and every now and then a
tawny frogmouth appears in the reserve like a small quiet gift.
Families will love how easy it is to spend time outdoors. Ievers Reserve
has been wonderful for younger children and the Nature Play playground
in Royal Park is a favourite for all ages.
We have also loved being able to wander down for a coffee or a meal at
the local cafes or Naughtons Hotel. Everything feels close and easy.
Royal Park has been our place for slow weekend mornings and Ievers
Reserve has been the backdrop for many relaxed family gatherings,
especially with the barbecue kitchen in the garage. The garage itself has
been incredibly useful with plenty of storage and laneway access.
Inside, the house has simply adapted to whatever life needed at the time.
There are small everyday moments we will miss, sitting on the front
verandah in the winter sun, finding shade under the golden elms on hot
days or having dinner in the cool courtyard on warm evenings.
Of all the places we have lived, this one has meant the most. It is a gentle
mix of space, privacy, nature and community, all in a spot that still feels
connected to the city.
We hope this home brings you the same sense of comfort and
happiness it has brought us.
