Custom-renovated Victorian terrace with dual street frontage in Parkville’s premier location
Beyond beautifully landscaped gardens with a Japanese cherry blossom, the statuesque sunken façade reveals a glorious foyer with a blue acorn light by glass artist, Mark Douglas. Set beneath soaring ceilings with rosettes, stunning living and dining zones are separated by a magnificent archway. Both have opulent marble fireplaces, solid timber cabinetry and custom lighting – a George Nelson saucer and an antique French chandelier.
Baltic pine floors transition to spotted gum via a bluestone step in the superb extension. A gourmet Carrara marble kitchen offers Miele appliances (dishwasher, oven, steam oven, plate warmer), a Siemens induction cooktop, Liebherr four-door fridge/freezer and Vintec wine fridge, plus an ironbark bench and extensive cabinetry. Green views extend across an internal courtyard with nineteenth-century Chinese doors surrounded by Madagascar Jasmine, while the kitchen spills onto a wrought iron Mark Douglas pergola covered by a spectacular grape vine.
Drenched in light at the back is a sumptuous sitting and meals area with an iconic Mantis Scone wall light and steel doors that open onto a deluxe entertaining deck with a retractable awning. This private oasis is nestled in tranquil garden surrounds accented by Japanese maples, antique Moroccan doors and a fishpond. Wide steps link the house to an impressive studio (or retreat) and secure single carport with direct access to Redpath Rise and popular Ievers Reserve.
The restored staircase leads to a large dedicated study zone with a glorious Mark Douglas light and picturesque views of Bayles Street. At the front is a king sized master bedroom with built-ins, a c1840 Japanese bedhead and gracious lattice balcony. Nearby is a spacious second bedroom with built-ins and Cole & Son wallpaper, generous third bedroom with built-ins and a Mr Perswall mural, bright third bedroom and sparkling family bathroom. An Italian Vistosi glass light completes the first floor. There is also a pristine downstairs bathroom and good sized laundry with great storage plus hanging rails, heated rails and louvre windows.
Extra features include attic storage (3.7m x 3.5m), under-stair storage, split system a/c, instant gas hot water, hydronic heating, new wool insulation, four ornate fireplaces throughout and an automatic watering system. In addition, this resplendent home is placed leisurely walking distance to The University of Melbourne, Lygon Street restaurants, vibrant Errol Street and CBD trams, as well as North Melbourne Primary School and University High School (both zoned).
Owners Notes
We have greatly enjoyed living in this fabulous house for the past 12 years, on one of the most beautiful streets in Parkville.
Our three kids have grown up here, progressing from North Melbourne Primary School to University High School – both just a few minutes’ walk away along Park Drive.
We love walking our dog in Royal Park, just two minutes around the corner, strolling through Melbourne Uni to Lygon Street, and wandering up to Errol Street in North Melbourne to enjoy the many restaurants and shops. There’s also our local café nearby, along with Naughton's Hotel, where we’ve often caught up with friends for dinner.
With trams close by, access to the city and beyond is easy, all adding to the convenience of this fantastic location.
The house has been restored and renovated with love and attention to detail. Thoughtful design elements, combined with high-quality construction, finishes, and appliances, have created an incredibly functional and beautiful family home that’s easy to live in. It’s great for entertaining, with a large kitchen and multiple living areas.
The flow of the house – from the traditional terrace-style front rooms to the contemporary, renovated rear – makes it a true pleasure to live in. The two front rooms, opened up and connected by a grand archway, offer a spacious and flexible living area. The rear, light-filled second living space and generous kitchen layout flow seamlessly onto the deck, and down wide stairs to the studio below. It’s been a wonderful family home with space for everyone.
We will miss the extended green views of the trees from both front and back, birdsong in the mornings, and the occasional hot air balloons gliding just overhead as they come in to land in Royal Park, just 100 metres away.
Now, as our children leave the nest, it’s time to say goodbye to our beautiful home and let another lucky family enjoy everything it has to offer.
