Unapologetically Pink: Inside Fitzroy North’s ’Barbie's Dreamhouse'

4 min read

In the heart of Fitzroy North, where heritage charm usually meets understated modernism, sits a home that defies every "safe" design rule in the book. Known affectionately as the "Barbie Dreamhouse," this single-fronted gem is a masterclass in texture, pattern clashing, and the transformative power of colour.

The home has been the personal sanctuary of interior designer Chloe, her husband and their little one, with Chloe turning a change in renovation plans into one of the neighbourhood’s most distinctive residences.

A Dream Rooted in the North

For Chloe and her husband, Fitzroy North wasn’t just a location; it was a lifelong aspiration.

"My husband and I both grew up in the northern suburbs," Chloe explains. "We had both always dreamt of living in Fitzroy North. It was a random thing we bonded over when we met. We are big foodies and are quite partial to a good glass of vino. This area has an endless array of good restaurants, bars and pubs which makes us both feel right at home."

The Pivot: A Designer’s Creative Shift

Originally, the plan for the property was a traditional second-storey extension; however, when post-COVID building costs surged, Chloe pivoted her creative energy to focus on a high-impact interior transformation that maximised the home's original character.

"We decided to create the 'Barbie Dreamhouse' instead," Chloe says. "The house had great bones – the original façade, the arched detailing in the hallway, and the classic single-front floorplan. As a designer, I knew that regardless of which path we went down, the opportunities were endless."

The "Dopamine Decor" Influence

Chloe’s aesthetic is heavily influenced by the daring American "dopamine decor" movement and maximalist icons like Dani Klaric and Dani Dazey. For Chloe, colour is more than a visual choice – it’s emotional.

"I am heavily inspired by colour and the way in which it can influence your mood, feelings and thought pattern," she says. "This is always at the forefront of my design process. We leaned into pattern clashing and heavy textural elements to create a space that feels truly authentic."

A Tale of Two Energies

While the home is "bright and bubbly" by day, the spaces undergo a cinematic transformation when the sun goes down.

"Our home offers a completely different energy at night," Chloe notes. "We are not users of the ‘big light’ – we have many lamps on at all times in the evening to create layers of lighting. The pink tones become richer and feel like a warm hug. A standout is definitely the projection of light on our ribbed wall panelling."

Materials and Standout Moments

The home’s character is defined by a series of bold, intentional finishes:

  • The Floors: A striking red and pink checkerboard floor in the kitchen and laundry. "I believe this is truly the 'wow' moment. The combination is so bold; I could stare at those floors all day."
  • The Kitchen: A beautiful blue marble benchtop accompanied by floor-to-ceiling handmade Moroccan Zellige tiles.
  • The Oasis: Custom wallpapers and ribbed cladding that turn each bedroom into an individual maximalist retreat.

Leaving a Legacy of Colour

As Chloe and her husband prepare to renovate a new home, they leave behind a space that has been a profound teacher in authenticity.

"The creation of our home has been such a journey," Chloe reflects. "We are super hopeful that the new owners will accept the home for what it is and not want to paint it white – but if they do, that is totally okay. We just hope they adore the kitchen as much as we do."
