The Elgin Gallery: A Carlton landmark finds its next chapter

2 min read

A distinctive Victorian shopfront with a history as both a lolly shop and an art gallery, 61 Elgin Street has sold for $1.25 million. After passing in on auction day, the result was secured through post-auction negotiations.

Beyond the façade, the 150-year-old property offers a unique configuration: two self-contained one-bedroom residences across two levels with private entrances. This provides the new owners – a local first-home buyer couple – a range of options, whether occupying both or living in one and leasing the other.

Built in 1875, the iconic landmark has also served as a lolly shop, tailor’s studio and art gallery.

This was a rewarding result for our team, not just for the sale, but for the buyers involved. We had been working closely with this couple for some time, helping them navigate a competitive market to secure a home that also serves as a piece of Carlton’s cultural fabric.

The Victorian building consists of two double-storey, one-bedroom apartments, each self-contained.

For the vendor, this marks the end of a 30-year tenure and a significant chapter tied to a much-loved local landmark. For the buyers, it’s a considered move into one of Carlton’s most tightly held pockets, securing a home that offers both character and flexibility from day one.
